With the body pulled from the river now shrouded and carried to the mission, the question shifts from what happened to who will do anything about it. Sister Margaret leans on her war-time medical experience to examine the stranger, narrowing down how long she’s been dead and confirming one unsettling detail: this is no weathered drifter or camp follower, but a woman of clear means whose absence should matter to someone. While Father Nos prepares to see to the burial, Margaret quietly holds back what she’s learned about similar wounds elsewhere in the camp and turns to Buckman’s occult tome for answers—finding mostly pompous rambling, half-mad “wisdom,” and just enough disturbing ritual detail to keep her uneasy.
Bjorn and Gregory ride into town, determined to treat the river death like more than just another frontier misfortune. At the Silver Dollar they confront Herman Brewster, the man who helped secure their land and seems to know everyone worth knowing in Missouri Crossing. Under Bjorn’s steady pressure, Herman’s reaction to the news of a dead woman is far more telling than his words, drawing unwanted attention from Henry, the saloon’s watchful proprietor and local power. By the time they leave, the message is clear: in a town with no real lawmen, asking the wrong questions about the wrong dead woman can make you just as many enemies as allies.
About the Chronicle
Call of Cthulhu – Down Darker Trails: Missouri Crossing is a Western horror campaign set in 1867, using the Down Darker Trails supplement for Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition. The story follows the founding generations of Missouri Crossing, a rough camp town in what will one day become Bismarck, North Dakota—decades before the events of The Ultimate Evil. As immigrants, veterans, and drifters stake their claim on a cold, contested landscape, they must navigate community, lawlessness, prejudice, and the brutal realities of frontier life. Against this backdrop of manifest destiny, “northern horror” takes shape: long distances, bitter weather, scarce resources, and the creeping realization that some things lurking beyond the firelight are far worse than bandits or hunger.

As the first real chill of the season settles over Missouri Crossing, Bjorn throws himself into work and watchfulness—trying to balance providing for Johan with quietly gauging just how lawless this new town might become. Gregory, meanwhile, is finally back in his element at the forge, trading tools for furs and finding a small rhythm of normalcy in the constant clang of metal and flow of customers. That fragile routine shatters when distant screams pull both men to the river, where the washerwomen have found something that turns the settlement’s gossip into a full-blown disturbance.
Sister Margaret, shaken from a rare moment of comfort, joins them at the water’s edge to help examine the strange, unidentified body that’s drifted ashore. There are no obvious signs of violence—just a pair of unnerving wounds that don’t fit any animal she knows, and a growing sense that she’s seen those marks once before on someone very much alive. As the body is covered and the camp tries to return to normal, Margaret quietly arranges a secret meeting after dark, ready to share what she’s learned—and what she fears these marks might mean for Missouri Crossing.

Inside the storm-lashed campus, everything converges on the old barn. As Alex fights to turn the security house into a last line of defense, Mike and Derek stagger through the chaos, blood on the snow and too many bodies behind them. Inside the barn, Wayne awakens to a gathering that feels less like a school and more like a shrine—where faith, fear, and something much older than either are all staring up at him. By the time the night is done, the group will learn what this place was really built to hold… and what it’s willing to break to keep it.

A violent eruption inside the Bismarck campus forces the group into a desperate fight for survival as the storm outside grows as fierce as the danger within. When the halls flood with chaos and the night turns predatory, every choice becomes a matter of seconds. Far from safety and cut off from one another, the only path left is forward—into the blizzard, into the unknown, and toward the heart of something darker than they ever imagined.

What was supposed to be a quiet night of questions at Dakota Adventist Academy explodes into chaos as the boys of the school turn on Wayne, Alex, and the others. Separated in the dark, hunted through snow and hallways by knife-wielding students, the investigators are forced to abandon careful investigation for raw survival—and the academy’s cheerful motto starts to sound like a threat instead of a promise.

A quiet walk back toward camp turns into an unexpected detour when Sister Margaret is swept into a surprise Sister Michael has prepared for her—one small, much-needed moment of comfort in a town that rarely offers any. But just as Margaret begins to relax, something jolts her back to reality: frightened voices, running footsteps, and a commotion gathering at the riverbank.
When she rushes outside, she finds the women of the camp clustered around something drifting in the shallows. No one recognizes who—or what—it is, and the sight of it sends a shiver through the entire settlement. As Margaret works to steady Sister Michael and make sense of what’s happened, unease spreads fast. Whatever came down the river didn’t come alone; it brought questions the town isn’t ready to answer.

Sister Margaret wakes to a late start, a guilty conscience, and a reminder that the church in Missouri Crossing is held together as much by quiet forgiveness as by canvas and nails. When Lavender arrives at the tent seeking help, Margaret does what she does best—patches wounds, offers comfort, and quietly takes note of how wrong this strange bite still feels.
Determined to follow the faint trail of whispered occultism, she walks openly into Jerry’s riverside saloon in full habit this time, looking not for drink, but for a book: a notorious volume said to be passing from hand to hand in town. What follows is an uncomfortable dance of leers, half-promises, and careful maneuvering as Margaret negotiates with Old Pirate Pete for a chance to read it. By the time she leaves—with the book in hand and an uneasy future “favor” hanging over her—she’s also spotted a discarded Wells Fargo wagon rotting by the riverbank, a quiet reminder that whatever’s wrong in Missouri Crossing didn’t start with the settlers’ arrival… and may not be done with them yet.

Tension has been building for Margaret ever since the settlers struck their uneasy bargains in Missouri Crossing. Convinced something in town isn’t right—and unwilling to wait for someone else to act—she slips into the Silver Dollar to see the truth for herself. What she finds is a crowded, complicated place where power, fear, and survival quietly mix beneath the surface.
A risky attempt to blend in brings her face-to-face with the people who truly run the saloon, but it also leads to an unexpected connection with the women who work there. When one of them seeks her help for a troubling injury, Margaret realizes the trouble in town may be deeper—and stranger—than she imagined. And despite her disguise, her offer of aid may have just started something she can’t walk away from.

Scion “Under the Lonely Sky” Final Chapter: When the Stars Return
Wednesday Jul 14, 2021
Wednesday Jul 14, 2021
With the centaur camp in ruins and the conductor’s broken plans echoing in their minds, Alex, Farö, and Morales are left with a single grim truth: the thing that came through the sky isn’t finished with them. Out on the open prairie, far from the safety of Douglas and with the night pressing close around their headlights, the trio are forced into one last, desperate gamble to keep the horror from ever reaching anyone else.
As an unseen predator circles just beyond the edge of the light, old wounds, bad choices, and fraying tempers collide with the weight of their divine callings. A risky plan takes shape—one that will demand timing, trust, and more from each of them than they ever meant to give. When the lonely sky finally fills with stars again, nothing about this road trip, or the people who survived it, will feel quite the same.
About the Chronicle
Scion: Under the Lonely Sky is a Scion Second Edition one-shot by Twin Cities by Night. It follows three modern demigods on a northbound road trip toward the Canadian wilderness, pushed along by the whims of their divine patrons. What starts as cramped-car bickering and casual mythic banter quickly becomes a tale of eerie omens, small-town tension, and the thin line between the mortal world and the beings who move behind it. Featuring Becca, Jorin, and Slavic, this story blends road-trip drama, mythic weirdness, and creeping unease beneath a sky that refuses to shine.

Scion “Under the Lonely Sky” Chapter 4: The Thing Beneath the Star
Sunday Jul 11, 2021
Sunday Jul 11, 2021
Under a sky that still refuses to shine, Alex, Farö, and Morales finally come face-to-face with what was dragged in from beyond the lonely sky. In the flickering light of the centaurs’ camp, a misshapen creature tears its way into the world, and the fragile balance between mortal terror, divine will, and something utterly other collapses.
With panicked centaurs caught between worship and survival and the conductor clinging to the ruins of her failed “song,” the scions must decide where to stand—and what they’re willing to risk—to keep the horror from spilling any farther into the world. As bullets bend, plans fray, and the darkness itself seems to shift, the road trip that began with cramped seats and frayed tempers reaches a brutal, inevitable crossroads: under the lonely sky, not everyone gets to walk away unchanged.
