A late-night decision sends Alex and Wayne into a situation that unravels faster than either of them expects. What begins as a quiet investigation turns suddenly tense, leaving both men shaken and unsure of what they just experienced. A familiar face intervenes before things spiral further, but the warning they receive is impossible to ignore.
Back in Bismarck, Michael’s evening takes an unexpected emotional turn as he reconnects with someone important, only for a late phone call to reveal that the night is far from over.
Lines are crossed, trust is tested, and the shadows surrounding their search only grow deeper.
About the Chronicle

Wayne steadies his nerves with a change of clothes, a pocketful of tools, and a hardware store receipt he hopes never gets questioned, talking himself into believing this break-in is a duty, not a crime. Alex rides beside him, replaying his awkward almost-date with Tina while helping plan the quietest way onto school grounds. Together they hike through bitter North Dakota wind, skirt lights and cameras, and slip into the academy’s old barn, where horses, shadows, and an open view of the night wait for them. As a strange sound rises above them, it becomes clear that something about this place—and the sky overhead—is deeply, dangerously wrong.

Derek tries to unwind at home but finds himself caught between his parents’ fears and their hopes for his future, forced to quietly decide what kind of life he’s willing to risk for the work he’s doing. Meanwhile, Alex sits down to dinner with Tina, where small talk slowly gives way to cautious honesty. As worries about the school surface, an uneasy but important understanding begins to form — one that might finally give the investigators the help they need, if they’re willing to follow through.

As the wagon train pushes through its final stretch of wilderness, the settlers catch their first real glimpse of life beyond the trail—a lone homestead, its fields neatly planted, smoke curling gently from a chimney. After days of tension, sleepless nights, and dwindling nerves, this simple sign of civilization feels almost unreal.
Cautious approaches give way to wary relief as the family living there welcomes the party with warmth, curiosity, and a farmer’s eagerness to barter news for company. For the first time since the Twin Cities, real plates are set out, real food is cooked in a real kitchen, and the promise of a future in Missouri Crossing stops being a dream and starts becoming something the settlers can almost touch.
But even as hospitality is offered and stories are shared, not everyone finds it easy to let their guard down. Exhaustion, memory, and the ghosts of the journey still cling to more than a few travelers. Some see the homestead as safety earned; others see it as one last test before the crossing itself.
With night approaching and the town only a day away, each settler must decide how much they are willing to trust—strangers, the land, and even themselves—before taking their final steps toward the life waiting on the horizon.
About the Chronicle
Call of Cthulhu – Down Darker Trails: Missouri Crossing is a Western horror campaign set in 1867, using the Down Darker Trails supplement for Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition. The story follows the founding generations of Missouri Crossing, a rough camp town in what will one day become Bismarck, North Dakota—decades before the events of The Ultimate Evil. As immigrants, veterans, and drifters stake their claim on a cold, contested landscape, they must navigate community, lawlessness, prejudice, and the brutal realities of frontier life. Against this backdrop of manifest destiny, “northern horror” takes shape: long distances, bitter weather, scarce resources, and the creeping realization that some things lurking beyond the firelight are far worse than bandits or hunger.

Call of Cthulhu: Down Darker Trails "Missouri Crossing" Chapter 8: Burials and Bargains
Wednesday Mar 24, 2021
Wednesday Mar 24, 2021
Morning breaks over a shaken caravan, revealing hard truths in the light of day. Those who survived the night gather for food, headcounts, and the grim work of understanding what was lost. The relief of finding Mary safe is quickly shadowed by the realization that the trail now lies littered with the dead—cattle and people alike—and every choice from here on carries weight the settlers can no longer ignore.
As fear and exhaustion press down on the camp, tensions rise: how long can they stay in one place without inviting more danger, and how quickly can they leave without abandoning their fallen? Practical needs clash with spiritual duties, and the group finds itself split between honoring the dead properly and protecting the living from whatever stalked them through the dark.
Friendships strain, tempers flare, and the fragile unity of the caravan threatens to crack as everyone struggles to decide their own line between safety, faith, and survival. When tempers cool, uneasy compromises are struck—but whether they will be enough to hold through the coming night remains uncertain.
With the sun high and decisions made, the settlers turn their eyes westward. The closer Missouri Crossing comes, the more it feels like the only thing standing between them and whatever waits out there in the long prairie grass.

The night after the attack refuses to let go. Gregory is dragged back into the horrors of his war years as he tries to understand what he saw in the darkness—and whether it was something earthly at all. Bjorn can’t steady his hands or his mind, his leg bearing marks that look nothing like any wound Sister Margaret has treated before. As the three of them struggle to keep it together, questions of faith, evil, and responsibility start to cut almost as deep as teeth.
At first light, the scale of the damage becomes impossible to ignore: the prairie around the caravan is littered with dead cattle, the financial backbone of the journey torn apart overnight. Tensions spike as everyone argues about what happened, what to tell the others, and how quickly they need to reach Missouri Crossing before something worse finds them. And then a new terror hits home—one of the children is missing. With only a half-wild trail dog and fraying nerves to guide them, the settlers race into the killing fields of the open plain, desperate to prove that not everything the night takes has to stay gone.

13th Age “The Beginning of the End” Chapter 4: Questions at the Gate
Wednesday Mar 03, 2021
Wednesday Mar 03, 2021
As the fallout from their last battle settles, Sir Hugo and his companions find themselves far from solid ground—forced to confront not only strange realms, but the choices that led them there. In this episode, the party faces trials that can’t be solved with steel alone: unsettling questions about guilt, sacrifice, and what it truly means to fight for an empire that may already be rotting from within.
Their answers will shape where they can go next—and who they’ll be when they get there.
About the Chronicle
The Beginning of the End is a 13th Age tale set during the waning years of a desperate empire. A small group of unlikely companions is thrust into a web of betrayal, demonic influence, and political decay as they try to prevent Axis from falling into enemy hands.
Blending character-driven storytelling, high-stakes intrigue, and the chaotic magic of 13th Age, this chronicle follows the same living-world continuity established in prior Twin Cities by Night adventures—while forging a path that leads into darker, far more dangerous territory.

13th Age “The Beginning of the End” Chapter 3: The Falling Sky
Sunday Feb 28, 2021
Sunday Feb 28, 2021
On the impossible staircase of the overworld, Sir Hugo and his companions finally come face to face with the guardians standing between them and Lord Frederick’s ritual. As demonic hulks and twisted sorcerers close in, the group is forced into a brutal stand-up fight where every step forward is paid for in blood.
While Frederick chants over a heap of fallen angels and dragons, the very world around the party begins to shudder and tilt, hinting at the catastrophic magic he’s about to unleash on Axis. Hexar and the king struggle to hold the line against overwhelming force, Azorella wields dangerous magic that scorches friend and foe alike, and Sir Hugo must decide where his blade – and his leadership – will make the most difference. The threat is no longer abstract: the heroes can feel the capital’s doom rushing up to meet them, and they’re running out of time to stop it.
