After the hardest stretch of the journey so far, the caravan finally reaches real towns, real streets, and real comforts—if only for a little while. Full bellies, clean clothes, and small moments of joy help the settlers remember why they left their old lives behind, and what they’re hoping to build at Missouri Crossing.
But out on the open prairie again, the mood shifts. Supplies, faith, and tempers are all running thin, and trust in certain leaders is no longer a given. When a seemingly ordinary night in camp is broken by strange smells, restless animals, and the crack of gunfire in the dark, the settlers are forced to confront a terrifying truth: the dangers they face on the trail aren’t just weather, hunger, and distance.
By morning, nothing feels as simple—or as safe—as it did the day before.
About the Chronicle
Call of Cthulhu – Down Darker Trails: Missouri Crossing is a Western horror campaign set in 1867, using the Down Darker Trails supplement for Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition. The story follows the founding generations of Missouri Crossing, a rough camp town in what will one day become Bismarck, North Dakota—decades before the events of The Ultimate Evil. As immigrants, veterans, and drifters stake their claim on a cold, contested landscape, they must navigate community, lawlessness, prejudice, and the brutal realities of frontier life. Against this backdrop of manifest destiny, “northern horror” takes shape: long distances, bitter weather, scarce resources, and the creeping realization that some things lurking beyond the firelight are far worse than bandits or hunger.

Call of Cthulhu: Down Darker Trails "Missouri Crossing" Chapter 5: Hunger on the Trail
Wednesday Feb 17, 2021
Wednesday Feb 17, 2021
The hard-won crossing of the Mississippi leaves the wagon train on the far bank—but not yet in the clear. As Bjorn, Gregory, and Sister Margaret each take point in getting cattle, wagons, and precious supplies over the river, the settlers finally touch the edges of civilization again in the booming town of La Crosse. Gregory steals a rare moment of normal life with Samantha—music, a saloon, and a dance that almost lets them pretend they’re not living out of a wagon.
But once the train pushes north along the river, a new threat starts quietly in the flour barrels. Strange green contamination turns daily bread into a gamble, and by the time anyone realizes how bad it is, sickness is already moving through camp and the food stores are dwindling fast. With less than a week to go before the next real town, difficult choices loom: tighten belts, risk slaughtering the herd, or send someone ahead. Bjorn volunteers to ride on alone toward the Twin Cities in search of fresh provisions, leaving Gregory to hold a hungry caravan together and Margaret to sit vigil over a fellow sister whose body—and faith—are both starting to fail under the weight of the journey.

With the Mississippi blocking their way west, the settlers of Missouri Crossing are forced into their first real negotiation with the unknown. Johan’s panicked shot has put everyone on edge, but when Bjorn rides out to meet the figures on the far bank, he discovers not a raiding party—but two Dakota men who seem more amused than angered by the frightened wagon train. What follows is an uneasy, wordless dance of gestures, sand-drawn maps, and halting translations as Bjorn, Gregory, Sister Margaret, and Father Frank try to turn a fearful standoff into a workable deal.
As Red Fox and Rising Cloud show them a possible crossing point and hint at better routes ahead, the settlers must decide what their safe passage is worth—tools, livestock, precious personal comforts, even ammunition. Around the campfire that night, as tea is shared and new boats are woven for the morning, tensions ease just enough for deeper truths to surface. Bjorn finally lets the edges of his past show, Margaret measures her calling against the reality of the frontier, and Gregory quietly steps into the role of the man others look to when it’s time to move heaven, earth, and wagons to the other side.

In the pale hours before dawn, Marco Giovanni finds himself on the brink—his control fraying, his hunger awakening. The events of the previous night have left him shaken, vulnerable, and desperate for stability. With Rita’s expectations looming and his ritual work spiraling out of hand, Marco turns to his ghoul, Jamie, to help clean up the mess and guide him through the long, cold hours that remain.
But survival in the Twin Cities demands more than composure. As the hunger gnaws deeper, Marco is forced to face what he’s become—and what he must do to regain his strength. When duty and instinct collide, only one truth remains: the dead can wait, but the Beast cannot.
This chapter delivers a hauntingly intimate study of the Giovanni psyche, exploring power, submission, and the fragility of control beneath the neon quiet of Minneapolis streets.
About the Chronicle
“Eidolon” is the fourth major arc in the Twin Cities by Night Vampire: the Masquerade continuity — following Negligence, Homecoming, and Dread — yet it also stands alone as an introspective, horror-laced drama.
Set in the fall of 2010, Eidolon explores themes of death, obligation, and the unseen cost of power. The story follows Marco Giovanni, a necromancer drawn into the Twin Cities by the command of an elder, where he must expand his clan’s reach while contending with his own haunted past.
A duet chronicle between Adam (as Marco Giovanni) and Chris (as Storyteller), Eidolon continues Twin Cities by Night’s tradition of exploring the personal horror at the heart of Vampire: the Masquerade — this time, through the eyes of one man bound by ghosts both living and dead.

In Where the Flies Gather, Marco Giovanni delves deeper into the work that binds his soul to both the living and the dead. The night after a disastrous encounter, he turns to ritual—to necromancy—as both penance and pursuit. But the spirits he calls to answer do not forgive, and what begins as an act of duty becomes a haunting revelation about betrayal, faith, and the cost of seeking truth.
As Marco peers into the eyes of the dead and crosses the boundary between the physical and the spiritual, the veil refuses to stay closed. He begins to uncover fragments of violence, echoes of lost love, and something far older whispering from beyond. The silence that follows leaves him changed—and not entirely alone.
This episode explores the spiritual rot beneath the Giovanni’s polished civility, where ritual becomes obsession and guilt becomes communion. Where the Flies Gather is a meditation on control, inheritance, and the quiet horror of realizing that even the dead may have unfinished business with you.

As night settles over Bismarck, Michael finally faces a conversation he’s been dreading with his mother, forcing him to confront a kind of helplessness no case can fix. Back at the office, Derek’s unease with the group’s escalating tactics collides with Wayne and Alex’s decision to cross a line and break into the academy’s barn, even as Alex’s quiet dinner with Tina becomes both a rare moment of warmth and a new way to dig deeper into the secrets surrounding Toby’s disappearance.
About the Chronicle
Michael and Derek follow a fragile lead to the Open Door Baptist Church, hoping a former headmaster with ties to Toby’s past can finally crack the case. What begins as a polite visit turnsintsot a tense confrontation, as evasive answers, Welkstetter money, and old loyalties hint at just how deep the corruption around them really runs.

Wayne and Alex head to the Adventist Academy, where a quiet lunch with a withdrawn student and a walk down too-clean halls hint at just how wrong the place feels. A hostile head of security shuts their visit down, forcing them to leave with more questions than answers. Back at Dakota Investigative Services, a shaken but determined team compares notes, follows a troubling hunch about an old barn on campus, and starts weighing how far they’re willing to go to uncover what’s really happening to these kids.
